How To Walk In High Heels

We all want to look gorgeous in high heels, but mastering the art of walking in high heels can seem like a mystery to the best of us. But fret not, all it takes to achieve that glamorous high heel walk is a little practice and some helpful tips along the way. WeÔÇÖve put together our top ten tips for not only walking in high heels, but feeling fabulous while you do.

  1. Break-in your new shoes before you go out. DonÔÇÖt wait until youÔÇÖve walked out the door to discover your gorgeous new heels are agony inducing ÔÇô always break them in at home. New shoes should be worn around the house for two hours to soften them and shape them to your foot. Wear them with thick socks or tights to stretch them a little and get used to how they feel. If youÔÇÖre debuting a particularly high pair of heels, wear them around the house for 20 minutes before you leave. This will soften them up and allow your feet to get used to them, so you donÔÇÖt get any nasty shoe-related surprises!
  2. Take it one shoe at a time ÔÇô if youÔÇÖre new to high heels, start off with smaller heels and gradually increase the height. Wear your different heel height shoes around the house and outside so you get used to them and build up your confidence ÔÇô by the time you step into the 4 inch platforms you should feel much more at home.
  3. Strengthen your feet. Wearing high heels is hard on your feet but stronger muscles make it easier to take killer heels in your stride. ThereÔÇÖs an easy exercise you can do for this, all you need is a chair back for support. First stand normally then rise up onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels as high as you can go. Repeat 5 times. Do this as part of your daily exercise and youÔÇÖll really notice a difference.
  4. Perfect your posture. Holding yourself well will make you more stable in your heels. Stand up straight, relax your arms and turn your feet out slightly to give your more control and a firmer base.
  5. Glide donÔÇÖt strut. WeÔÇÖre used to seeing models strut up and down the catwalk in towering heels, but on us mere mortals, this strutting walk looks more like an ungainly stomp! Concentrate on moving gracefully and smoothly for a confident, glamorous look.
  6. Slow down. Taking your time is the key to looking elegant and confident in heels. Slow down your steps and walk at a relaxed pace.
  7. Invest in good shoes. Good quality shoes make a world of difference to your comfort. Ideally the heel of your shoe should come straight down in from under the foot and your whole foot should feel supported.
  8. Take good care of your feet. Your feet take a battering whether youÔÇÖre in heels or not, so take the time to massage your feet every day. This takes just 2 minutes and will help to strengthen and relax your feet.
  9. Exercise your core muscles. The muscles in your abs, stomach and back hold you upright and take the strain off your knees, so make sure you exercise them regularly.
  10. Walk with confidence. Gorgeous new shoes are a sure-fire confidence booster, but if you are worried about stumbling it can ruin your night. Follow our high heel tips and make sure you feel fabulous in your shoes before you leave the house ÔÇô remember, the most attractive quality of all is confidence!
